Hey Guys I have a S&W model 66-4 round butt with a 4" barrel I know the -4 was made between 1994 and 1997 however I don't know when exactly. Anybody know how to date one by serial number?

There are a couple guys here that do.
They helped me out.

I'm sure they'll be along eventually.
august1410 is one. he is really knowledgeable.

In my signature line is a link to how to post pics.
I and other members would love to see it.

I have a 1957 .357 combat magnum (later designated Model 19), and a model 65-4

I'm sure someone may be able to give you a manufacturing date. This book may be able to help as well.

Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson by Jim Supica, Richard Nahas

For fans of Smith & Wesson firearms, this book is a must-have. This work provides easy-to-locate listings organized by model ad year of manufacture to quickly and accurately identify firearms. With more than 775 models of Smith & Wesson guns and variations, including many models not found in other firearm-pricing guides, this is the book for any Smith & Wesson gun-toting fan.

Sure try PMing august1410.
He is a great guy and really knowledgeable about em.
Copy and paste the address bar to this thread and he can throw out some knowledge for us all to learn from if he is so inclined.

If anyone can tell you date from seriel, it will be him.

To the original poster ...

... the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson doesn't list the CAA serial number prefix. So I'm going to guess in the late 1994 to early 1995 range.

But it's important to remember that serial number assignments were not normally all that sequential. And, that a gun could sit in S&W's vaults for months (years?) before being shipped, so it's anyone's guess when it actually arrived in the dealer's hands.

The only way to know for sure would be to request a factory letter. They cost $50, and the last I checked the waiting time is around three months.

Mike

PS - sometimes you can call S&W's customer service and get them to look up the shipping date. I've had varying luck with that.

It's funny you mention that about the CAA prefix...everything I find about the CAA 66-4 comes back to it being a THREE inch barrel. Wonder if this started life as a three incher and had the barrel swapped.

I'd like to see under the grips to see the stampings on the frame.

Is there any correlation between the serial number prefix and the configuration? I'd imagine that any correlation would only relate to a particular production run. I'm not an expert on K frames, so I guess anything is possible.

Either way, it's a really nice piece. Is the barrel pinned?

I am thinking this because I have never seen a 66 round butt with a 4 inch barrel. I would bet dollars to donuts the barrel has been replaced. If it has, the three incher is far more valuable.....while a round butt 66 with a 4 inch barrel is interesting, it kills any value because the original gun has been altered.
