So why are suppressors included in the NFA?

A friend of mine (from another forum) who owns many NFA items, sent me this link today. It's a somewhat lengthy read regarding some history of the NFA, but I found it very interesting. If you have the time, I'd recommend reading it.

If you don't have the time, and want just the Cliff Notes, basically the author couldn't find a reason for suppressors to be in the NFA either. Also from this research, its seems the whole NFA was enacted just to combat Al Capone and other gangsters of the era. The $200 figure (tax stamp) was derived as a 100% tax on the price of a machine gun at that time, which has never been changed.

I’m not real sure if the real reason but I was told that during the Depression when the NFA first started crawling through the swamp certain people were concerned that individuals would buy a suppressor and use it to hunt illegally thus depriving Uncle Sam and states of revenue from hunting license fees, etc. also it would make finding poachers much more difficult. Again not sure how accurate that is but makes more sense than anything else I’ve heard.
I know I’m preaching to the choir but a suppressor on a gun is like a muffler on your car yet you don’t need to pay a tax stamp on your car muffler.
