Hello everyone,

I will soon be a proud North Carolina resident and this is my first post here. I have been trying to find information on this, but I can't seem to find specific details, either way. If I purchased a handgun in Georgia, and move to NC, what are the requirements? I want to be sure to do this legally and by the books. Is the standard sheriff permit that NC requires residents still required in my case since I'm coming from a different state? Am I required to notify anyone that I'm a handgun owner? I'm not a concealed owner, just have a handgun for home defense. Any help would be much appreciated!

AFAIK, as long as you own the handgun prior to the move, you are ok.
If you want to conceal carry, then you have to get a permit from the sheriff in the county in NC you will be living.
If you already have a permit, then you should be able to do a change of address and be good. You have 30 days to do this. If you don't, you have to start over with the application.
If you don't already have a concealed carry permit, then you are required to take a handgun safety course, then once you get the certificate from that, you can get the paperwork, and file it with the Sheriff's office. Then wait.
NC is an open carry state.

First Welcome from Brunswick county and Afghanistan. You are correct in understanding that nothing is required for you moving here and owning your personal firearms. NC open carry does not require a permit. It is legal as long as you are legal to own a firearm. Acquiring additional handguns you would need to show that you've lived here at least 30 days showing residency and then state law requires either a Pistol Purchase Permit or Concealed Handgun Permit from the sheriff prior to buying. Long guns just fill out a 4473 and background check if from a FFL. None needed from a private sale for long guns.

Back in 2012 when I moved from Kalifornia to NC, I had a 70+ gun collection. I simply moved them; there were/still are no requirements to advise anyone, unless you are permently moving Class III weapons, in which case you must advise the ATFE. Here's one thing to consider. I moved to Orange County which at the time required that you live in the County for one year before they would issue a PPP. However, if you get a concealed carry permit that one-year residency rule is overridden and you can get all the PPPs you want as soon as you want them, if your county has a similar one-year rule.

Welcome to NCGO and thankfully a free state. You do not need to report to anyone concerning your firearms. Unclear on whether you are moving from Georgia or just using that as an example. Please consider joining GRNC and helping us keep North Carolina free.

Welcome from Orange County. The info previously posted is all accurate. You don't need to do anything unless you want to buy a pistol or carry one concealed. I will warn you that the process to get a pistol purchase permit or concealed carry permit takes a few months so I'd recommend it just in case you change your mind. Also, the required concealed carry class gives you an introduction to NC self defense law since those vary by state.

AFAIK, you can't transfer a CCP from another state to an NC CHP (Concealed Handgun Permit in NC parlance :) ) ... you will need to get your NCDL taken care of and take an NC CHP class, then you can apply for your NC CHP.

I would check with the sheriff's department in the county you are moving to.
You might not have to start from scratch.

As we say around here, "Hey!"
Welcome aboard, and thank you for signing on, not lurking around anymore. As a former newbie, I know that it's sometimes difficult, if not scary to start posting on a forum. So just a suggestion- click around and find the introductions page, do a post to introduce yourself to everyone. You don't need to tell us any more than you are comfortable with. Things like what county you live in, what kind of things draw you to the forum (Hunter, Target shooter, Competitive shooter, Just want to learn about guns and shooting). Stuff like that. Look around and soak up the wealth of knowledge that is available, and please share any knowledge that you may have acquired in your lifetime. Or maybe a good joke. We could all use a laugh... Have a great day!

To ensure everything goes smoothly with your move, and that you're complying with all legal requirements for transporting a handgun, you might consider consulting with a state-to-state moving company that has experience in handling such matters.
