Changing address on CCW?

Hey guys.
Just moved to Durham from Wilmington.
In the process of changing my address on my driver's license, but I'm wondering what the procedure is for changing the address on my conceal carry permit?

Is this something I can do online or do I have to do it in person?

Hoping someone has some experience with this.

Thanks in advance!

When I moved from Scotland to Hoke county I went to the Hoke sheriffs office. They did the address change, gave me a temporary paper permit until my replacement was issued.

This seems like more of a hassle than I thought it would be.
I haven't even had my permit for a year yet.

There is almost no way that I will be able to make it back to Wilmington in the near future.

Should I not carry at all while I have a driver's license with my Durham address but a carry permit with my Wilmington address?
I know they both need to match.
But it seems like anytime anyone moves there has to be a period in between where they don't match while you are trying to change addresses.
I know you said you have gotten this straightened out, but just a comment. If you do change address with previous county sheriff, they should give you a print out verifying the change. That paper along with original CHP will suffice until renewal (or if you go get a new one).

That is my understanding (correct me if I am wrong)
you are correct

Good to hear Wilmington was easy to work with. Guilford required everything be done face to face.

Just an update. For anybody that is curious, you do NOT need to go back to where your permit was issued. The county where your permit was issued just needs to fax a change of address form to the new county. You then fill it out at the new county, and they send it back to the original one. And then you can get a duplicate permit at the new county with the new address.

I recently changed the address on mine. Mine was just moving from one place in Durham to another, so only had to deal with the Durham Sheriff's office. I had to go there, show my new drivers license with the new address and pay $15 cash (or $18.45 with credit card) for a duplicate permit. They gave me a temporary permit on a piece of paper and said they would call in 7-10 days when my new permit was ready to be picked up.

I lurk here, but guys….

Here in North Carolina, you have a Cconcealed Handgun Permit.

Leave all your nomenclature from where ever, there.

I am :) just so you know. :)
While we are making sure we all use the correct nomenclature and words, note that "where ever" is actually one word - wherever.

:hilarious: Sorry - couldn't resist! No harm, no foul.

Comma. You did catch the part about reporting a change of address to the sheriff in Wilmington within 30 days regardless of anything else (i.e. even if you aren't going to proceed with CCH in new location)?

It's like CCH holders are registered predators.

Also some sheriffs offer a duplicate CCH with new address so you don't have to carry that piece of paper around. I think I paid $5 for my last duplicate.

Thanks for bringing this topic up. The process really chapped my butt last move...but was too busy moving to deal with it. Time to contact reps and McCrory.

What about folks who don't have a permanent address? Motor home, short term rentals, van down by the river, etc.

There is.

A person who is issued a permit shall notify the sheriff who issued the permit of any change in the person's permanent address within 30 days after the change of address.

Once you have your new license, you have to change your address with the issuing county, they will then give a paper showing teh chnage, to be carried along with your permit until renewal time. I moved from Gso, to Statesville and had to go back to Greensboro to do the paperwork. Fortunately my CCH was due for renewal shortly there after so I renewed in Iredell with no issue.
I'm confused.
Are you sure they don't issue a new card with the new address on it? I thought that's what they told me in my class.
And are you saying I would have to go back to Wilmington to do this?

My license doesn't expire for almost 5 years. Are you saying I have to also now carry a folded up piece of paper in my wallet for 5 years? That doesn't seem right...

Does anyone know where I have to go to change the address in Durham County?
In the case of a recent move between two adjoining counties where my girlfriend has to change hers, she took the old CHP permit, and the paper from the old sheriff's office with the change of address, to the sheriff's office for the county of the new address. They issued her a new card with the new address.

Since you are so far away from Wilmington, there may be another process. Call your old county first though, as that is where the process would start.

ggrjr gave you the correct information. Changes of address are done through the sheriff of the county that ISSUED your permit. For you, that is New Hanover County. Durham County cannot change the address on your permit.

§ 14-415.11. Permit to carry concealed handgun; scope of permit.
(a) Any person who has a concealed handgun permit may carry a concealed handgun unless otherwise specifically prohibited by law. The person shall carry the permit together with valid identification whenever the person is carrying a concealed handgun, shall disclose to any law enforcement officer that the person holds a valid permit and is carrying a concealed handgun when approached or addressed by the officer, and shall display both the permit and the proper identification upon the request of a law enforcement officer. In addition to these requirements, a military permittee whose permit has expired during deployment may carry a concealed handgun during the 90 days following the end of deployment and before the permit is renewed provided the permittee also displays proof of deployment to any law enforcement officer.
(b) The sheriff shall issue a permit to carry a concealed handgun to a person who qualifies for a permit under G.S. 14-415.12. The permit shall be valid throughout the State for a period of five years from the date of issuance.
(c ) Except as provided in G.S. 14-415.27, a permit does not authorize a person to carry a concealed handgun in any of the following:
(1) Areas prohibited by G.S. 14-269.2, 14-269.3, and 14-277.2.
(2) Areas prohibited by G.S. 14-269.4, except as allowed under G.S. 14-269.4(6).
(3) In an area prohibited by rule adopted under G.S. 120-32.1.
(4) In any area prohibited by 18 U.S.C. § 922 or any other federal law.
(5) In a law enforcement or correctional facility.
(6) In a building housing only State or federal offices.
(7) In an office of the State or federal government that is not located in a building exclusively occupied by the State or federal government.
(8) On any private premises where notice that carrying a concealed handgun is prohibited by the posting of a conspicuous notice or statement by the person in legal possession or control of the premises.
(c1) Any person who has a concealed handgun permit may carry a concealed handgun on the grounds or waters of a park within the State Parks System as defined in G.S. 113-44.9.
(c2) It shall be unlawful for a person, with or without a permit, to carry a concealed handgun while consuming alcohol or at any time while the person has remaining in the person's body any alcohol or in the person's blood a controlled substance previously consumed, but a person does not violate this condition if a controlled substance in the person's blood was lawfully obtained and taken in therapeutically appropriate amounts or if the person is on the person's own property.
(c3) As provided in G.S. 14-269.4(5), it shall be lawful for a person to carry any firearm openly, or to carry a concealed handgun with a concealed carry permit, at any State-owned rest area, at any State-owned rest stop along the highways, and at any State-owned hunting and fishing reservation.
(d) A person who is issued a permit shall notify the sheriff who issued the permit of any change in the person's permanent address within 30 days after the change of address. If a permit is lost or destroyed, the person to whom the permit was issued shall notify the sheriff who issued the permit of the loss or destruction of the permit. A person may obtain a duplicate permit by submitting to the sheriff a notarized statement that the permit was lost or destroyed and paying the required duplicate permit fee.
